An early welcome to April!
And a happy close to Week 8 of the Nevada Legislature. It has been a fast and furious week at the NVLeg, and I sure do have some updates for you. Monday was 'Deadline Day', the last day for most bills to be introduced, resulting in many 'Behind the Bar' meetings not accessible to the public or open to public comment. A great editorial summing up the issues can be found here.
You may be wondering why things change so quickly at the NVLeg. It may surprise you to learn that the Legislature exempted themselves from Open Meeting Laws. Normally, agenda items need to posted three days prior to the meeting to allow the public time to review the content. At the Legislature, no such rule exists. Bills can be added in the same day and there is minimal notice to the public. This anti-transparency mindset is bad for good government and bad for Nevada.
We want to put two ballot measures on the ballot in 2024: Voter ID and Mandating that the Legislature be subject to Open Meeting Laws. The only people who can force them to do the right thing are the voters. If you'd like to learn more, sign up below!
